Could Coenzyme Q10 boost my immunity?

CoQ10: A champion of good immunity 

CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant that is naturally produced and stored in your body—specifically, the mitochondrion, which serves akin to a battery and powers your cells’ biological functions. A 2008 study from the BioFactors journal examined the effects of CoQ10 supplementation on individuals before and after their vaccination against Hepatitis B, amounting to a total observation period of 90 days. Based on the researchers’ findings, compared to the placebo group, the participants who consumed 180 milligrams of CoQ10 daily exhibited a notable increase of 57% in antibody response towards the Hepatitis B antigen. 

CoQ10 is linked to improvements in health outcomes for ill patients 

In a 2014 clinical trial from the Iranian Red Crescent Medical Journal, elderly patients diagnosed with pneumonia were administered a CoQ10 dosage of 200 milligrams daily for 14 days. At the end of the study, the researchers observed that compared to the placebo group, the elderly patients from the CoQ10 group exhibited significant recovery and reported a shortened symptomatic period and decreased duration of antibiotic treatment.  

Findings from another clinical study revealed that CoQ10 (ubiquinone) supplementation reduced COVID-19 hospitalization risk in patients with a 95% confidence interval, pointing to the nutrient’s possible protective effect against the disease. The researchers note, however, that this warrants further investigation in future controlled studies. 

Clinical implications 

While these and other existing studies do not verify CoQ10’s ability to offer better immune function and response, they point to the nutrient’s potential in helping individuals boost their immunity and ward off disease. In addition, bear in mind that taking supplements alone will not guarantee optimal or disease-free health. 

Nonetheless, CoQ10 may still be consumed to supplement your efforts in staying healthy.  

Get the most out of CoQ10’s potential benefits by making other healthy lifestyle choices such as maintaining a well-balanced diet, constant hydration, regular exercise, and adequate sleep—all of which contribute to your holistic health. 

Recommended dosage 

The typical recommended intake ranges from 30 milligrams to 90 milligrams daily, but it can be as high as 200 milligrams to 300 milligrams per day. Dosage may vary depending on your preferences and the conditions you wish to manage.
