Could CoQ10 protect my lungs?

If you’re looking for a great way to keep your lungs healthy and strong, look no further. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) may be the right antioxidant for you!

CoQ10: Your lungs’ natural antioxidant

CoQ10 is a potent antioxidant that is naturally produced and stored in the human body—your cells use it to support growth and function as well as to perform other biological processes. Because of this, it plays a valuable role in defending your cells and vital organs from deterioration in the long run.

The lungs are susceptible to oxidative stress due to the gas exchange processes that occur like clockwork, as well as external factors such as air pollution and cigarette smoking. Oxidative stress is a phenomenon characterized by an imbalance between highly-reactive free radicals and antioxidants; if it persists, it may lead to the onset or progression of chronic lung diseases.

Unfortunately, as you age, CoQ10 levels in your body naturally begin to deplete. Some studies have also explored a possible link between low levels of CoQ10 and individuals diagnosed with chronic lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.

But, there is good news: Your body can absorb CoQ10 through food sources and supplements! CoQ10 powers your lungs by helping neutralize or destroy free radicals before they wreak havoc on healthy cells.

Chronic lung disease patients may experience improved symptoms with CoQ10

A 2005 clinical trial examined the effect of standard antiasthmatic therapy versus treatment with added CoQ10 (120 milligrams), Vitamin E (400 milligrams), and Vitamin C (250  milligrams) co-supplementation on corticosteroid-dependent patients aged 25-50 years with persistent mild to moderate asthma over a total duration of 32 weeks. The researchers found that following supplementation, the patients required fewer corticosteroid dosages—revealing the possibility that CoQ10 can help fight oxidative stress.

Although experts are still exploring the medical benefits of CoQ10 on lung health, this study reveals the possibility that antioxidant supplementation may inhibit oxidative stress on the lungs, reduce inflammation in the organ, and promote antioxidant-free radical balance in the body.

CoQ10 may boost physical activity parameters

A study conducted in 1993 investigated the impact of supplemental CoQ10 on the lung function and exercise performance of COPD patients by measuring serum CoQ10 concentrations while at rest and during incremental exercise. Based on the study’s findings, after taking 90 milligrams of CoQ10 supplements daily for 8 weeks, the COPD patients reported lower heart rates and improved blood oxygen levels and exercise performance.

Because of this, the study concluded that taking CoQ10 supplements may potentially benefit chronic lung disease patients struggling with hypoxemia, a condition that can cause shortness of breath because oxygen levels in the blood are not within normal range.

Clinical implications

While these and other existing studies do not verify CoQ10’s ability to keep the lungs free from disease, they point to the nutrient’s potential in helping individuals avoid chronic lung illnesses in the long run as well as achieve better exercise parameters.

In addition, bear in mind that taking supplements alone will not guarantee optimal lung health. Nonetheless, CoQ10 may still be consumed to supplement your efforts in staying healthy.

Get the most out of CoQ10’s potential benefits to your lungs by making other healthy lifestyle choices such as maintaining a well-balanced diet, constant hydration, regular exercise, and adequate sleep—all of which contribute to your holistic health.

Recommended dosage

The typical recommended intake ranges from 30 milligrams to 90 milligrams daily, but it can be as high as 200 milligrams to 300 milligrams per day. Dosage may vary depending on your preferences and the conditions you wish to manage.

It is highly advised to consult with a medical professional before taking CoQ10 supplements, especially if you have any existing health conditions or chronic illnesses.
